The BEST thread rack for your sewing room
Are you looking to get more organised in your craft room and need thread storage? I’ve looked at lots of options, and tried a few, but here is my all-time favourite thread rack with a special feature that I love!

When I first started sewing, I stored my thread in a drawer, first up just loose and then using a plastic thread rack. My bobbins were kept in a separate bobbin case.
But as my thread collection grew (along with all my other sewing supplies), I found it annoying finding the right bobbin for my thread spools. Or I’d be hunting around for a bobbin color that I hadn’t even wound. And there was something about that bobbin case that made the thread tails go everywhere. I’d somehow pull a random thread and end up in a tangle whenever I grabbed a bobbin.
I wanted to keep my spools of thread and matching bobbins together, but the diameter of the pins on my spool rack was too big and the bobbins didn’t fit.
There are spool clips or you can use rubber bands to keep them together, but I want my thread on a rack, and I don’t like small plastic things that break!
I looked at lots of thread storage ideas and racks and they all had the same problem – wooden ones, making your own from pegboard etc – the pins were just too thick to fit a bobbin.
Then I found this metal thread spool rack, and all my problems were solved.
I love this wall-mounted thread rack, firstly because the bobbins slot right on, and I can keep them on the same pin as the matching spool. And brightly colored spools look so pretty on my wall!
There’s also a good gap between the pins so different spool sizes fit, such as embroidery threads or even the larger thread cones. You can’t put the largest thread cones next to each other, but you can pop smaller spools in between, and still fit lots on your thread rack.
Quick tip: If you’re ordering this online, check the reviews before you buy. One version I bought was packaged with just bubble wrap in a plastic mailer bag, and they arrived bent and damaged.
It has a brushed metal finish and feels really sturdy. Mine are hanging up with just two command adhesive hooks each, and they don’t move around at all when I’m grabbing thread.
And because I can’t stop looking at cute craft supplies, I’ve since spotted this cute Sewing Machine Spool Rack from Ackfeld, which also appears to fit bobbins. It’s available from Amazon, Fat Quarter Shop and Etsy. There’s also a matching one with needle and thread at the top on Etsy.
And another quick tip, don’t put your thread rack in direct sunlight, as it can damage your thread and cause thread breakage. Mine is on the same wall as my window, right next to the window, so it never gets direct sunlight.
