Quick and Easy Pillow Case sewing tutorial

Pillow cases are such a quick and easy sewing project. It’s a great first sewing project for beginners, and only needs 1 yard of fabric. A couple of quick straight seams and your done!

In blog land, the burrito-method pillowcase is really popular, but I like to sew a much simpler design. And an added bonus is it has a flap to hold the pillow in place.

The hardest part is picking out the fabric!

Supplies

• 1 yard (90cm) quilting cotton fabric
• General sewing supplies (sewing machine, scissors, pins, thread etc)

Instructions

Step 1: Fold the fabric in half, with selvedge edges together. Square off the cut edges, if required. Cut the fabric 20 ⅝” from the folded edge.

Step 2: Unfold the fabric and press a ⅜” hem on one end. DO NOT sew the hem yet.

Step 3: Fold over the fabric 30 ⅝” from the unhemmed end and press. DO NOT sew.

Note: I prefer to measure from the unhemmed end since 1 yard fabric cuts can be variable. The flap could be a little longer or shorter depending on how accurately the store cut the fabric!

Step 4: Unfold the hem and flap from Step 2 and 3. Fold fabrics right sides together and sew the top and bottom sides of the pillow case.

Optional: Finish the seams with a serger or zigzag stitch. This will be tucked away in your pillow case, so it’s up to you how neat you want it on the inside!

Step 5: Refold the hem previously pressed in Step 2 and sew in place.

Step 6: Fold the flap (pressed in Step 3) back into place. Stitch in the ditch along the side seam and sew a line of stitches along the fold line to hold the flap in place.

Step 7: Turn your pillow case right side out and stuff it with a pillow!
