Sinclair Gina Faux Layer Top sewing pattern review
I always love a smart casual top, but some nice details. In fact, that’s pretty much my entire wardrobe, so I jumped at the chance to test Sinclair Patterns latest design: Gina Faux Layer Top.

This top is designed for knit fabrics, and to me, looks like an open cardigan with a built in cami underneath. It’s a nice way to create a layered look without having to wear all the layers! The faux cardigan also stays in the right spot, no gaping or falling off the shoulders.
It’s a semi-fitted design that I find flattering and easy to wear.

The gray fabric is a midweight stable knit. I’m not sure exactly what it is, as I got it in a knit fabric remnants mystery bag from Minerva. I do love a fabric surprise bundle! The colourful under fabric is DBP. That panel is a great way to use up fabric scraps. Funny thing is, I can’t remember what I originally sewed in this fabric!
This pattern sews together really quickly, and is easy to follow. The pattern is suitable for confident beginners. I caught the flu when I had to sew up my final version. I was surprised how easily it came together even when my brain was all fogged up (although I had sewn a fit version when healthy, so that probably helped!).
Overall, I’m happy with the pattern. The fit is as expected, and I always love that Sinclair offers three height options. It’s not my favourite top pattern, though, so I’m not sure I’ll sew it again. The end result, while lovely, is not quite my style (but I’ll still wear this one to death!).
The pattern options include:
- short , 3/4 and long sleeves, with two cuff lengths on the long sleeve
- regular and wide collar bands, as well as the foldover option I used
- regular and wide waistbands
- flat under-layer with two neckline heights, as well as the cowl design.
